Combating Human Trafficking
Thursday, December 5, 2024 (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM) (CST)
Description
Combating human trafficking requires a coordinated approach, and the transportation industry is uniquely positioned to play a critical role. Human trafficking, often described as modern-day slavery, is the exploitation of individuals through force, fraud or coercion for labor or sex wherein a third party makes a profit. It affects millions of people worldwide, with many victims transported across major transit routes. Transportation professionals are in a unique position to identify and report trafficking, though a lack of awareness can sometimes hinder their ability to intervene.
Discussion Points:
- Understanding the scope of human trafficking: how widespread is human trafficking and what forms does it take.
- Why the transportation industry is critical: What makes a driver and others uniquely positioned to fight trafficking?
- Signs and red flags: What red flags should drivers look for when trying to identify potential trafficking situations?
- Resources and training: What resources are available to drivers and companies to support these efforts? Does it cost anything and how could we begin training?
- Impact and success: What impact have trained drivers made in combating human trafficking?
